The opportunity to study large-scale models of civil engineering systems
was substantially expanded in 2004 by the establishment of the George
E. Brown, Jr. Network for Earthquake Engineering Simulation (NEES)
funded by the National Science Foundation. As one of the major projects
in the first series of NEES research (NEESR), this study is addressing
important aspects of bridge system performance. The technical focus of
this study is on three approximately quarter-scale test models of
four-span bridge frame supported on three shake tables at UNR.
There
is considerable interaction with several other universities. Bridge
abutment studies, as a part of this project, will be conducted at the
University of California, San Diego (UCSD) on its large outdoor shake
table (LHPOST).
Objectives
The
overall objectives of the project are listed below. The objective
of
the December 2008 shake table test at UNR is to determine the system
behavior of a reinforced concrete 4-span bridge that incorporate
innovative materials and details that include Nickel-Titanium alloys,
fiber-reinforced concrete, and columns with built-in Elastomers.
The model will be subjected to uniform biaxial ground motions simulated
on three shake tables and additional abutment actuators. Detailed
information about the bridge piers is posted at:

- Conduct a comprehensive investigation of seismic performance of a series of large-scale four-span bridge systems including abutment effects.
- Evaluate relative performance of components, bridge piers, and bridge systems and implications on design.
- Incorporate innovative materials in bridge piers.
- Use OpenSees for comprehensive evaluation of bridge models.
- Utilize the study to promote earthquake engineering at K-12 programs.

Requirements:
A Media player capable of supporting the Windows Media 9 codec. For
Windows users this generally means Windows Media Player 9 or greater.
Note: This link will not work until immediately
before commencement of the experiment.
These
alternate video streams will focus on various aspects of the structure.
This will be the same video that is being recorded by our DVRs.
Requirements:
A Media player capable of supporting the Windows Media 9 codec. For
Windows users this generally means Windows Media Player 9 or greater.
Note:
Newer versions of Windows Media Player generally cannot have more than
one instance of itself running. This obviously poses a problem when
viewing multiple Windows Media streams. As a workaround, we recommend
launching the older Windows Media Player 6.4. To launch this player go
to Start->Run and type "mplayer2". Then, from within Windows Media
Player 6.4, go toFile->Open and then manually enter one of the links
above (copy and paste should work).
Windows
Media Player 6.4 will have to download a Windows Media 9 codec to view
this stream. Provided that you have install privileges, Windows Media
Player 6.4 will do this automatically (a dialog box asking if this is
okay will popup).
These
alternate video streams will provide lower quality video than the DVR
Video Stream, but can be viewed on a standard PC with a Web Browser.
Requirements: We recommend a Mozilla based browser
such as Firefox or SeaMonkey to
access these video streams. Further details (reasons why) can be found here.
